Bengaluru:The Department of Health and Family Welfare (DOHW) has banned some drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction from entering the market.
The regulator has also imposed a ban on the sale of the popular erectile dysfunction drug ‘Viagra’, which is sold under the trade name Sildenafil Citrate.
The drug, sold under the name Viagra in the market, is a popular medicine that has been used to treat erectile dysfunction since the 1990s.
Viagra is the trade name of the drug known as ‘Sildenafil Citrate’, which is manufactured by Pfizer Inc.
DOHW also has banned the sale of ‘Viagra’ for several reasons.
In 2019, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had seized more than 10 million counterfeit and adulterated tablets and herbal supplements, in the state of West Bengal.
“The government has banned a number of drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction from entering the market and the sale of these drugs may be illegal and could be life-threatening,” said the DOHW commissioner, who was present during the hearing.
The regulator had said the “Viagra” tablets were not made by the company, and it was therefore illegal to sell any of these products to the public.
“It is illegal to import or sell prescription drugs that are not approved by the federal government to treat erectile dysfunction. The medicines that have been sold by the companies are adulterated with undeclared or harmful substances,” said the commissioner.
The sale of the popular erectile dysfunction drug ‘Viagra’, which is sold under the trade name Sildenafil Citrate, may be illegal.
“The drug is an effective drug for erectile dysfunction and is not safe to use,” he added.
